Does College Matter?
Exploring the Complexities of First Generation Students

Higher education has strong roots in Free Methodism, but not all students are created equal. What is a first-generation student? What do their experiences look like? Why do they even matter? Melissa Lima, a higher education professional in residence life, will explore the multiple identities, struggles, and obstacles that first-generation college students experience and how they can receive support that they need. The question behind this all is how can we make higher education more accessible?

Melissa Lima received her BA in Christian Ministries from Le Tourneau University and her MA in higher Education and Student Development from Taylor University. She works at Westmont College as a Resident Director. She is extremely passionate about student development and supporting underrepresented students.
